एस्ट्रोनॉमी में चंद्र के पेनंबरा में प्रवेश का समय दोपहर 14.30 होगा जिसे भारतीय ज्योतिष में चंद्रमालिन्य कहा जाता है।  पेनंबरा से बाहर आने का समय रात्रि 20.31 होगा जिसे भारतीय भाषा में चंद्रकांति निर्मल हो जाना कहा जाता है। भारतीय पौराणिक परंपरा के अनुसार ग्रहण का सूतक 4 अप्रैल की प्रातः ही  सूर्योदय से शुरू हो जाएगा।

सूतक के दौरान कोई भी धार्मिक कार्य, विषेश मांगलिक कार्य , संसर्ग आदि न करने की सलाह दी गई है। इसका मूल कारण चंदमा के क्षीण होने पर सोचने समझने की शक्ति क्षीण होना माना गया है जिसमें मानव मस्तिष्क,विषेश महत्वपूर्ण निर्णय ठीक से नहीं ले पाता। वैज्ञानिक रुप से ग्रहण का प्रभाव हानिकारक विकीरणें के कारण मनुष्य जीवन पर पड़ने की आषंका रहती है।
